Up Close and Personal with Healthcare Careers

Did you know that the healthcare sector employs more Greater Peorians than any other sector? And that on any given day there are over 700 open healthcare related jobs in our region? That’s a lot of opportunity, but how are showcasing these to our students?
Well, Illinois Central College (ICC) is on the case! This past March ICC, in partnership with Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center, UnityPoint Healthcare – Methodist | Proctor, OSF Medical Center, Pekin Hospital, and the Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford Education for Employment offices, hosted their fourth Healthcare Careers Expo at the Jump Trading Center.

This expo showcases the amazing healthcare careers available in our region and the affordable training programs available to students through ICC. This year’s event drew 220 students from across Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford counties. More than 100 volunteers assisted in the event, which provided the opportunity for students to spend the afternoon getting up close to their future careers. In all, 11 healthcare careers, from Medical Lab Technician to Nursing, Radiography, and more, were featured.
During the Expo, students participated in eight breakout sessions, including Anatomy & Physiology labs, an EMT simulation, intubating dummies as a Respiratory Therapist, and more!
“It’s critical to expose students to all the engaging, hands-on work that healthcare professionals do,” said Wendee Guth, ICC Health Careers dean and Healthcare Career Expo chair. “It’s just as important to foster interactions among educators, professionals, and students. It’s amazing to see the professionals sharing their passion and enthusiasm with students.”

So what’s the end goal of all this work? “Ultimately, our goal is to build our workforce in Greater Peoria, and help them find a career here,” Wendee explained. “There are so many opportunities that are hidden, or unknown to students, so to be able to get them excited about careers they didn’t even know existed makes it all worth it.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves Wendee!
So, if you or your students are looking for a way to connect with healthcare careers in Greater Peoria, it doesn’t get much better than ICC’s Healthcare Careers Expo! To learn more about the Healthcare Careers Expo, and to find out how to connect your students please contact Wendee Guth at healthcareers@icc.edu!
