Focus Forward Central Illinois calls Asian carp bowfishing event a success

EAST PEORIA — The executive committee of Focus Forward Central Illinois heard that last month’s Flying Fish Bowfishing Tournament was a success — both physically and financially.

At Tuesday’s meeting at East Peoria Community Bank, John Hamann, rural economic director for Peoria County, reported that 1,000 people took part along with several area restaurants in a program that saw invasive Asian carp caught, cooked and consumed.

“We raised awareness and caught 3,000 pounds of carp — all for $800,” said Hamann, referring to expenses incurred for the July 12 tournament.

FFCI board member Mike Everett added that conservation efforts gained $40,000 through fundraising efforts connected with the fishing tournament.
