Summer interns to attend final event in Live GP Intern Mixer series

Interns working during the summer at Greater Peoria businesses have gathered every Thursday evening over the last seven weeks for food, games, and to become more familiar with the region’s diversity of employers and amenities.

The final GP Intern Mixer will be hosted by CEFCU on Thursday July 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with an afterparty at 8 Bit Beercade in Downtown Peoria.  The mixer series is part of the Live GP program at the Greater Peoria Economic Development Council.

Over 150 interns registered for the mixers with an average of 51 attendees at each event.  Many of the interns are either visitors to the region for the summer or out-of-town students currently attending Bradley University and Illinois State University.

“The goal of Live GP is to attract young professionals to our region,” said Kate Cundiff, director of workforce solutions at the Greater Peoria EDC.  “It’s hard to truly experience our region when you are only working here for one summer or going to school full-time.  We wanted to provide more social opportunities for these interns so that they will consider Greater Peoria as a real option for living and working following graduation.”

Comments received from a survey of interns that have attended over the course of the series provided positive feedback about the region and the events.

Winners of the mixer scavenger hunt at Bradley University walked away with additional swag.

“I didn’t know what Greater Peoria was before these events,” said one respondent.  “I enjoy learning about all of the different work and life opportunities in the area.”

The mixers were hosted by different employers and each was followed by a casual afterparty at a local restaurant or tavern.  Bradley University, Pekin Insurance, Heinold Banwart, Caterpillar, UnityPoint Health, Clifton Larson Allen, and ONEFIRE all took turns providing the interns with refreshments, trivia, scavenger hunts, and gift certificates to area parks and restaurants.
